A grotesque scene of a husband surprised upon returning home refers to popular themes of the Rococo Revival period, which sought inspiration in Rococo form, decoration (rocailles and gilding), and the subjects of Meissen figurative scenes produced in the eighteenth century. These groups were highly admired and figures were re-cast from old moulds and further imitated by other porcelain factories.
